Participants 8762 men aged 20-80.
Main outcome measures All cause mortality up to 31 December 2003; muscular strength, quantified by combining one repetition maximal measures for leg and bench presses and further categorised as age specific thirds of the combined strength variable; and cardiorespiratory fitness assessed by a maximal exercise test on a treadmill.
Conclusion Muscular strength is inversely and independently associated with death from all causes and cancer in men, even after adjusting for cardiorespiratory fitness and other potential confounders.
In other words, be strong and you’ll live longer no matter what. Even if a rock falls on you, you can lift it off you. If you get schmashed between two cars, you can push the one car off you, if you need to hang from a helicopter as it takes off you’ll not fall to your doom, if you need to run away from a rolling boulder and leap across a chasm it’ll help to be strong.
Also:
Make sure you squat… Or else you might look like these guys.
Word. Strength is good protection from accidents not JUST because you can run away or push the boulder off you. Muscle is far more effective padding than fat. A well-muscled person is damaged less by a collision.
Where are his flippin legs???
I know, it’s so wrong it looks like it was photoshopped.
It’s not his fault. All the leg machines were in use or had “out of order” signs on them!
Speed lets you avoid all those situations. Plus you get there in time to get a seat on the helicpter.
Nancy sez: “Good vision prevents many accidental situations.” It also makes is real easy to see your puny legs.
Dude Ive got more leg than he does and I’m a chick!!! Yea (banded chained OH front and back squat!!) squats!!! Nancy: Wow Nancy am I in trouble or what??? Hopefully my big legs will make up for my lazy crossed eyes!!
Goffe Sez: “Goffe hijacked Nancy’s computer and wrote that post. She might agree though.”
Great motivation to do more squats. This is really good information. Most people think of just cardio when they think of health/fitness or dropping pounds. It’s simply not true. You must address all aspects of health, cardio just being one of them.
It’s also true that you can’t be healthy just doing a bunch of squats. Thus “Cross” Fit.
