I don’t ever post stuff like this, so here it is.
Take a second if you like to to think about where you were on 9/11. I was in the gym with my roommate Sean Evans lifting weights at the campus weight room at 6:00am. I honestly forget what we were hitting that day, most likely some upper body routine, you know the drill. The thing I’ll never forget, the radio was always tuned to this R&B/Hip Hop station, and the two DJ’s in the morning, a guy and a girl who were everything they should be, super upbeat, hip and full of attitude and really quick back and forth, you get the motif. They cut the song, which radio never does, and the guy came on and was like “uh, so there’s an uh, urgent new story everyone, from the east coast. The uh pentagon and the two towers in New York city have been bombed and what appears to be crashed into with airplanes. It’s all coming out very quickly on the news channels, we’ll do our best to keep you informed.” And with that very out of character exposition the radio returned to Ashanti or some other trite Rhythm and Blues group. Everyone just stared around at each other, still moving the machine or pumping the dumbbell; suddenly keenly aware of how weird it was that we were all there doing that, then. Being some of the first to know on campus as generally undergrads do not rise before 7:52am to get to their 8am classes, it was interesting to watch people here the news for the first time.
Here’s to all in remembrance.
